Radio 1 Big Weekend

Each year Radio 1 kicks off the UK music festival season by staging a major three day event at obscure locations around the country that are considered off the beaten path as far as such events are concerned. The last time I can recall it coming anywhere near us was in 2011 when Carlisle was chosen...perhaps ironically using our now sister airport as the location! 2019 saw the event come to Stewarts Park in Middlesbrough, and with them they brought just enough air traffic to make this page worthwhile.

Notes

  • The above list assumes that the corporate traffic on the event days were not unrelated regular movements, and that corporate traffic on the days immediately before and after the event were unrelated regular movements (although there was a Flexjet movement on 23/05 and OO-WEG returned on 31/05).

  • All traffic was handled by Stobart Jet Centre with the exception of the A340 which was handled by Swissport. There are conflicting reports as to whether or not Miley Cyrus or Mumford and Sons were on-board the A340, with more reports suggesting Mumford and Sons, who were photographed using the terminal buidling (and therefore Swissport) whilst Miley was not.

  • Intelligence received in the days leading up to the event teased Flexjet having received a large chunk of the trade as well as unspecified Challenger aircraft and that after hours extensions had been requested.
