Annual Review
Awards
Before we get to the TAM Awards, this seems an appropriate place to discuss the airports real accolades from this year. There is much scepticism of the validity of such awards, with too many entities offering too many identical awards. A single recognised body is needed. In September, we were crowned "UK and Irish Airport of the Year" at the panel-judged TTG Travel Industry Awards, up against several UK airports including Newcastle who were sponsoring the event. Unfortunately this was largely undone when Newcastle won an identical "Airport of the Year" award voted for by airlines at the 2023 World Routes conference and were the only UK airport nominated. On balance probably the more prestigious award. Obviously, Teesside and Newcastle can't both be Airport of the Year. Luckily, we had two more nominations in the pipeline, the first we didn't win, but were recognised as "Highly Commended" at the Airport Honours Awards 2023 by International Airport Review in mid-November, and we were the only UK airport shortlisted in that one. The final accolade and the big one came at the end of November when we won the public-voted "Best UK Airport for Leisure Travel" at the British Travel Awards, which was in turn a notch more prestigious than the one Newcastle won. Chris was privileged to be invited to that one and whilst still of the belief that there are too many similar awards by too many entities, you wouldn't think it given there was nothing "small-time" in this very lavish, high-profile and well-financed event, hosted by a TV presenter and narrated by the Strictly Come Dancing voice man. We needed the second and third acknowledgements to nullify Newcastles award and at some point no matter how sceptical you are of such awards, multiple nominations and wins equates to a 'no smoke without fire' scenario. They were nothing if not hard earned and well deserved.
