A Guide To Business Aviation
With the increase in business aviation activity in recent years under the supervision of newly formed FBO Consort Aviation (now Stobart Jet Centre), and for the benefit of our ever increasing audience from outside of the aviation community, we have put together the below guide to some of the more common business aviation aircraft types to visit Teesside International Airport.
What is an "FBO"?
First of all, what is an FBO? FBO stands for Fixed Base Operator, and is a company residing at usually a singular airport, sometimes more, dealing with corporate jets, recreational aircraft, visiting military aircraft and sometimes ad-hoc cargo charters.
What does an FBO do?
A good FBO will be multi-role, offering services in the following areas:
Ground Handling - the main one, an FBO will marshall an aircraft
on to stand, meet and greet the passengers, arrange onward
transport and accomodation, and for outbound passengers a meal
service.
> Hangarage - as part of the ground handling aspect, a good FBO
will have exclusive use of a hangar for both parking and engineering
(see below), or at the very least access to a third party
hangar.
Air Taxi - providing flights using their own in-house fleet.
Private Charter - chartering flights using third party fleets.
Aircraft Management - operating and maintaining an aircraft on behalf of an individual or business as part of their own fleet, often (but not always) these arrangements will allow the FBO use of the aircraft for their own needs up to a limit of so many hours per month/year.
Engineering - engineering and maintenance services for business and private aircraft, sometimes but not always including flying school and recreational aircraft.
Aircraft Brokering - buying and selling aircraft.
Flying Schools and Aero Clubs - some FBOs have flight training school / aero club subsidiaries.
Of the above, Stobart Jet Centre at present offer a limited handling service (the airport Duty Manager does the handling) and private charter services.
