Luton / Northolt / Farnborough Airshow / Birmingham 11/7/12 - 12/7/12 Dave Rose
Having not been to an Airshow for years, 2 come along at once!!! I had the opportunity to attend Farnborough on a Trade day so planned some meetings in the south!! First it was a call at a busy Luton, not much "out of the ordinary" but plenty of quantity. A quick scoot round the M25 and down the A40 to Northolt, not the most spotter friendly of places but always worth a call with 9 Biz present. The hedge at the end of the runway has been removed allowing much easier logging over the distant apron. After a few business meetings I headed off for Farnborough, parking was off site with a courtesy coach onto the field, smoothly through security with a trade pass and off we go. The weather forecast looked iffy but despite some really menacing showers around the field, it stayed dry and I worked my way around the static. One of the benefits of going in at 4pm is that the crowds have gone and its much more civilised, although they hadnt designed the static very well and they were too close for decent shots. There was a distinct lack of Biz in the static, Cessna had a Mustang (thats it!!) but there was plenty of variety including a Virgin Galactic spaceship and the 787 of course.
I had arrived during the display and missed the Malaysian A380 and the SSJ100 but the 787 made up for it, a truly superb display and extremely nimble and quiet. The Business airfield is closed during the display but there were at least 35 Biz parked northside which made it a very profitable "copping" session. Once the show ended the first 2 arrivals were a BBJ and a Boeing 737-200 exec which was very nice, then it got busy with departures and a few more arrivals so I stayed till after 6pm before getting the shuttle back to my car.
The following day I called at Birmingham for the 727 that has been parked there all week, so ending a very busy couple of days!!.
