Manchester and East Midlands

By Chris Smith

13th March 2024

As some of you may be aware, Teesside Airport Movements and Friends of Teesside International Airport have been working for some months now to have provisions for enthusiasts included in the various current and future building projects around the estate, especially the southside. One thing that we are being hamstrung by is the ever increasing security and compliance regulations set by the DfT (although I have my suspicions Teesside are going over-the-top with the application of these in comparison to other airports).

The decision makers are very pro-security and whilst we are not being chased like in days of old, enthusiasts are no longer considered in certain quarters to have sufficient "need to be there". One piece of advice I have had from a senior manager who is in theory all for our proposals, is to "try and take away their capacity to say no by providing examples of existing facilities elsewhere". Thus it was off to Manchester to photograph their southside mound, and then to East Midlands to photograph their northside trail!

MAN / EGCC

It's been three years since I was last at Manchester and things change fairly quickly here, in fact you could even say it's a shadow of its former self. They've never really recovered from the loss of Thomas Cook and Monarch, and I was shocked to realised that they no longer have any American carriers, even during summer!

The Jet2 757s are in the death throes and an opportunity to come and pay my last respects to them would have been good enough reason alone for this trip! The A321 NEOs are replacing them and I needed the lot (including the CEOs) which are split between here and Birmingham. I'd also hoped some of the new Virgin A339s might have found their way north, alas not. Another change is the appearance of a new Pier at the far end of T2, meaning the famous shots of the various airlines all lined up are reduced from double figures to just four or five.

Wednesday used to be the day to visit MAN as you had two Singapore A350s on the ground, plus Cathay, Ethiopian, Hainan and Saudia but there must have been a reshuffle as only the two Singapore's remain although there's still Etihad, Gulf Air and Qatar plus a very tasty Royal Jordanian A319 early afternoon.

Once the runway change took place at 11am, I made my way to the T1 multi-storey, although it's pre-book only now so I had to park in the adjacent short-stay and make my way up on foot which was easy enough. I was in the Airport Pub and I nearly choked on my beef brisket baguette when an Airseeker unexpectedly rocked up for an overshoot! Highlight of the visit that made several headlines in the hours afterwards!

Our future tenant Airbourne Colours saved the day a bit here, everywhere else was dead. I had just intended to quickly drive around with the exception of the northside trail which I planned to walk most of the length of as Google Earth showed a tin on the fire dump that looked like it might be visible, but when I got there the boggy conditions prevented it. A long way to dog-leg (90 minutes) just to then head back home but glad I did.

44 plus seven scrapes in the bag at MAN and another eight cops at EMA made it well worth the effort - and it did feel like an effort to begin with! I got to the mound at Manchester and wondered what the bloody hell I was thinking - but later settled in quite nicely.

It must be an age thing but I wasn't looking forward to the drive home, normally when visiting EMA I admit defeat and book the nearby Travelodge at a moments notice so I'm at least fresh for the three hours trek back. Unfortunately that wasn't really practical on this occasion as I started my next shift cycle at 7am the following morning. As it turned out, I was fine (although I had struggled between MAN and EMA).

Hopefully I came away with enough material (excluded from this report) to demonstrate the practicality and benefits of such rich spotting locations, although I'm thinking visits to Luton and Stansted might not go amiss to further bolster our case...!
