Amsterdam

By Chris Smith

A friend, colleague and gym buddy who is a low key enthusiast though she'd never admit it came across the Panorama Terrace at Schiphol and later the famous McDonalds adjacent to the Kaagbaan and decided she had to visit both. Despite being well over budget on trips and facing a financial loss for the year, who was I to deny her?

Finding reasonably priced return fares to Amsterdam is a lot harder these days than it should be, we ended up having to go from London and night-stop - fine by me! Despite the difficulty of the search, once booked we had achieved cracking deals in all areas - flights, accommodation (Amedia Hotel, Schiphol) and car parking!

We were initially looking around mid-March, but we didn't have enough overlapping days off, so we looked at more short notice dates with low expectations and to our surprise we managed to shoe-horn the trip into the end of the month with just two weeks to wait! I finished nightshift at 0530 on the 25th and an hour later we were on the road enroute to Gatwick to catch an easyJet across to Amsterdam!

Day One
Tuesday 25th February

After explaining to my colleague how it was the law, we made a quick pit-stop at Gamston, but to my horror, it's been completely spotter-proofed. I seem to recall from last time that modifications had been made to the pedestrian gate at the northern end making it harder to see, but we couldn't get down there anyway due to line painting in progress on the road. At the main entrance, the previous access barrier is now a sealed fence/gate with no gaps, and the Café garden glass fencing has been made frosted - a viewing area with no view! Going forward we can only hope a venture into the main building will offer/allow an upper floor view across the airfield. We left having seen absolutely nothing. I was a bit disgusted to be honest.

Timing was a little tight to get to Gatwick and I'd called in an hours lieu time owed to give a bit of an extra cushion, this allowed a short visit into Redhill for a coffee at the Hangar 9 Café. Despite being right next to the M23, it proved quite a deviation to get there, and once we arrived I'd forgotten the scale of the place. My one and only previous visit here in 2017 got me limited airside access with permission from the Café, with a worker later advising me to phone the tower for full access which would likely be granted, but it started chucking down before I had chance so just left. Time didn't allow for this today but it is an absolute must, so I think a purpose trip down here come summer might be in order! Some of the infrastructure here is in need of TLC and some hangars have non-aviation tenants which I always hate to see.

At Gatwick, I just logged loosely where possible on the way to and at the gate, then from the aircraft. Of the dominant airlines at any given airport, I only logged those I needed.

What was the very first aircraft seen after touch down on the "Buitenveldertbaan" (runway 27)? G-CLSN!!! The bulk of any spotting on my part would be done tomorrow so once again, I only loosely noted registrations from the aircraft and FR24 whilst wandering around elsewhere.

Day Two
Wednesday 26th February

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport

The day was started with a six minute walk from our hotel to the Luchtvaart Hobby Shop aviation megastore, which from the outside looks like nothing more than say, a disused car garage, with very little branding, but once you enter it is like nothing I've ever seen before. Every enthusiast needs to visit this place at least once! We also planned on walking to the preserved F27 PH-NIV on a nearby lake, but it would have been a 90 minute round trip on foot so we didn't bother.

We got the shuttle from the hotel to the airport and spent a few hours on the Panorama Terrace which had motivated Bryony to make the trip in the first place. We also explored Schiphol Plaza. Sadly, the runways in use were no good for the McDonalds next to the runway so that was canned. I had researched the Schiphol Behind The Scenes bus tour I've enjoyed twice before, but it appears to have been discontinued (the website no longer works) - a real shame! I reached out to Schiphol Special Ops, looking to exploit our job roles on the off chance something could be arranged, but they require twice the notice we were able to give and in their reply they stated they only cater for groups rather than one or two individuals.

OE-LSM was our ride home and like G-EJCE was a cop for me - bonus! The last time I flew on a CEO on the outbound and a NEO on the return (BA), the difference in performance was palpable, not this time, there wasn't much between the two, and the second-hand EJCE (ex-Peach) had the same modern interior as LSM, unlike the dated fabric seats found in our scrappers! We departed from runway 18L "Aalsmeerbaan".

London Stansted Airport

One of the conditions of keeping the price down was we had to arrive into a different London airport than we had set off from. With the car at Gatwick, we couldn't go for an illegal joyride around the northside business park so I could only hope I would be on the right side of the aircraft on landing to identify a few bits from photos afterwards. I wasn't. a gorgeous BBJ3 landed ahead of us but no sign of it. Loads of Jet2 and Ryanair on the deck but too dark to read any off, I maybe should have attempted a head count for both airlines then cross-referenced what was showing on the ground on FR24, this would likely have worked for Jet2 although some Ryanairs would no doubt be hangared.

London Gatwick Airport

As most reading this will know, Gatwick is a bit of a non-starter for spotting and on arriving back it was another Gamston - zilch! We completely underestimated the chew of getting across London, both in terms of hassle and cost - by the end of it, we must have spent the difference in price between a cheap easyJet fare and the KLM/Eastern Teesside fare! (us being aviation enthusiasts the only justification remaining for doing it this way).

A missed opportunity was a visit to East Midlands on the way home where cargo would have been in full swing. We had chosen a more westerly route to avoid tolls, on the way down this had not taken us past EMA, on the way back it did, but I fell asleep and by the time I woke up we had already passed. I hadn't really wanted my friend to see me in full nerd mode logging tail numbers left and right, but she seemed to fully understand why myself and others might partake in such an endeavour. Even more surprising given she can be a wind-up merchant! All in all, we managed a cheap trip out during our days off work that was a whole lot of fun! Full credit to Bryony for two five-hour drives with minimal stops!
