RIAT 2025

By Dave, Matt, Andrew and Chris

That time of year again and it seems the hype gets better every year; social media is full of posts as everyone converges on Gloucestershire for the highlight of the aviation enthusiast calendar. No matter what hotel you stay in or restaurant you visit - everyone is there for the same reason - the atmosphere is every bit as good as the show itself. Alas we won't get to experience it next year as we've decided to do probably the only show bigger - Oshkosh!

Day One
Saturday 19th July

Our first port of call on the day was the Royal Air Force Museum at Cosford. Chris and Dave last visited here as part of a Shawbury tour some 15 years earlier, one of Chris' first "proper" trips just as he started broadening his horizons! Matt even longer ago in 2006 and Andrew making his debut. Chris started to feel old, as for the first time ever he was visiting museums that contained exhibits that he has seen operational at Teesside or elsewhere - so lord only knows how Dave must have felt at Shuttleworth last year.....!!!! It was interesting to see just how much had changed - sadly one of the museum hangars (Hangar 1) with very interesting inmates inside including a famous Chinook, Comet 1, Argosy, Anson and Andover was closed for works. A running theme throughout the trip was "Hangarxiety" (just thought that up - quite pleased with myself!!) - closed hangars we knew were full, or empty hangars that should be full.

Note 1: G-AOVF, painted in RAF Support Command colours and marked as XM497 is not the real XM497, which was a 250 series and designated "Britannia C1" by the RAF.
Note 2: The Tornado replaced the Jaguar as the main type used by the resident No.1 School of Technical Training, although several redundant Jaguars remain dotted around the base. We logged four outside a HAS on the south-side with two more unidentifiable, and three more stored outside one of the college hangars. Google Earth shows a compound with 13 stored at the western end of the airfield, and one preserved outside of the Station Headquarters within the base. Including the Museum exhibit, it is thought 50 of the type remain on-site. Meanwhile the school uses 11x Tornados and 13x Hawks, plus a couple of random other types.

Next we made the short hop to Halfpenny Green where the WWII-era infrastructure gives this bizjet-capable airfield a lot of character. Chris was the only one who had been once before. Very conveniently, you need to go airside to access the excellent Amelia's Bar and Restaurant where we enjoyed a great lunch, although it was here we were first pestered by wasps, something that would plague us throughout the trip. BBC News were running an article about the sheer numbers of them around this year and we can certainly attest to that.

We were well ahead of schedule so we decided to travel beyond our planned destination and double back later, thanks to the appeal of some Chinese inmates at Cotswold Airport (formerly and better known as Kemble), home of Air Salvage International the original UK aircraft recycling firm. Despite weathering the storm of every man and his dog starting up recycling operations back in the 2010s (including our own Sycamore Aviation), they have sadly lost their title of market leader in recent years to the outfit at St Athan. Despite that, they still have plenty of airframes spread around the site in various states. Presumably Willis are limited at Teesside by available space. The wasp issue was ten-fold worse here, there was easily the equivalent of a nest split between five or six bins at the vibrant AV8 Restaurant. We got well lucky here when we realised we could see RIAT displays in the distance - we copped the new RAF Wedgetail which wasn't on the docket for the next day during our visit.

Final stop of the day before going to our Best Western hotel just 10 minutes away was Gloucestershire Airport. Back in 2017 Chris bagged an airside tour courtesy of some volunteers, sadly a number of changes in management have put a stop to them. An e-mail direct to the airport went unanswered but they've just had "special attention" lifted by the CAA having been under the most extreme level of oversight short of licence revokation, so probably don't want anyone airside who doesn't need to be there. Nevertheless we came away with a decent haul, Chris felt you could drive into more nooks and crannies than on previous visits. The Aviator Café was very busy due to the BoBMF operating from here during RIAT. Nice to see Aeros' new P-Mentor, the first of an order for 14.

Day Two
Sunday 20th July

We were up bright and early at 6am and around 50 minutes or so later we arrived at RAF Fairford and were straight in with no fuss. We spent the usual 20 minutes or so queuing waiting for the tents to open and then we all got through smoothly - well, almost all of us did...one of us attempted to get in with a 2024 ticket but we won't say who as it wouldn't be fair on Matt...........

We went straight to our booked hospitality enclosure - "Flight Deck" and set-up camp right on the front row by the 27 touchdown markers - ideal! With it not being a Farnborough year, we decided to reinvest the cost of that ticket on the upgrade. We ended up going to the Farnborough-equivalent Paris Air Show anyway, but we didn't know that at the time. You can spread the cost if needs be by purchasing the enclosure ticket a month or two after the air show ticket. You get a complimentary drink, lunch (choice of three or four mains plus potatoes and rabbit food) and a dessert, plus the prime spot with nice chairs and private toilets - all for about the same amount as you would normally spend at the stalls anyway so it balances out nicely.

The weather let us down initially, with frequent showers in the morning, thankfully it had minimal impact on the display. We chose to leave the static until the afternoon when the forecast was better. On hindsight this was a mistake, Dave was first back allowing Chris to set off who had been keeping watch over our belongings, but by this point he only had an hour max and that included grabbing some pulled pork, chicken goujons and roast potatoes before leaving the enclosure! From one end to the other takes around 40 minutes, ideally you need to allow for 90 minimum. Whilst obviously very fruitful, for Dave and Chris there was little enjoyment to be had from what was a 100 mile-an-hour whiz around.

For the Fairford log, we've just uploaded the checklist Chris knocked up the evening before the trip, altered with any corrections and additions.

After leaving Oxford another unscheduled stop to Turweston found the gate shut and all locked up! Madness that on a sunny summer weekend evening anyone wanting to go flying here can't beyond 6pm! We abandoned a planned stop at East Midlands, it seemed busy but all routine stuff. Andrew was firing on all cylinders after leaving Oxford, picking off OTTs left, right and centre. So concluded another great pilgrimage to RIAT...and with Oshkosh equating to at minimum two years worth of trip budget, it was quite emotional knowing there won't be anything to look forward to between now and then. Well worth it no doubt! You know it's not a bad hobby when the spotting consistently comes third to the company and atmosphere! Cheers to the lads for a fantastic couple of days!
