This years annual fly away took us to Aero Expo 18 at Friedrichshafen (or Eggfriedriceshafen as Ando likes to call it!), the largest event of it's kind in Europe. Day one saw us head for a night-stop in Strasbourg via a lunch stop at Ostend, day two we made our way to Friedrichshafen but due to the popularity of the event the nearest available accommodation within flying distance was at Augsburg. Day three we headed for home with another lunch stop at Lelystad.

This year we welcomed two newbies to the group; Chris Everitt - owner of Scenic Air Tours North East, on a *ahem* - scenic air tour!! He also flies as Medops 01 with IAS Medical and provided Khalid with some IR tutoring and guidance in the right hand seat of G-BRDO. In G-STEA many local enthusiasts will know or at least know of Andrew Povey, who has been a keen DTVA photographer for many years now. Both very welcome additions to the team and great company! We were also pleased to welcome back Jack Hornby, a now retired IAS Medical medic, who had to miss the previous trip due to injury. A couple of withdrawals were Dave Rose and George Anderson, both of whom were sorely missed and hopefully they will both be back next time around.
We're at a point now where we need a third aircraft; otherwise we're always going to end up disappointing someone by not being able to accommodate them and disappointing ourselves at the same time by not being able to enjoy their company; G-AVRK is the obvious choice but due to impending fatherhood Chris E will need to stock up on "brownie points" to trade in for future trips. Mind you a third aircraft with potentially four more people then presents it's own problems for Ando in terms of booking hotels and restaurants etc, but hopefully workable.

Day One
Friday 20th April
We made the usual pit stop for fuel and lunch this year choosing Ostend, and like Groningen last year we found an airport very similar to our own in terms of scope and scale. A TUI 737 was hammering the circuit but the real surprise was the Egyptian A300 freighter, apparantly a regular with a couple of daily flights and a building with their branding all over it - an odd pairing!

Strasbourg was a bit busier than Ostend; perhaps the level we should be aiming to be at in a couple of years time. We were gutted to learn a Czech Air Force Yakovlev Yak-40 had been in earlier in the day, they seem to be regular visitors here. I went for a wander whilst the two aircraft were being put to bed for the night and I was delighted to find the closed up hangars had windows - a rarity and something that has frustrated on past trips! The next hangar down was for private GA and a couple of pilots gave me the eyeball so I took a couple of quick shots of the aircraft hoping I'd captured the regs then headed for the exit!
We were all struck by just how cultural Strasbourg is, with all present vowing to return with their other halves in future. Would recommend the "Hotel Rohan" which is a few hundred yards from the Cathedral and well placed for exploring the city.

Time for the main event; the annual "AERO Friedrichshafen", this huge trade show is one of the biggest in the world, attracting 600 exhibitors and 33,000 visitors each year. The day before we got wind that Fridays turnout was 300 visiting aircraft and a further 200 on display!! On arrival there were hundreds parked the full length of the airports main southerly site, then on the north side was a good few more which I assume was the premium parking being right next to the huge exhibition centre where the show was being held adjacent to the airport. You can't park yourself amongst that many aircraft so we exited the runway and waited for a marshaller, who soon arrived on a bike and signalled us to follow him, an airport shuttle bus was running pilots and passengers across to the Expo. Whilst waiting for the marshallers air traffic control was interesting to listen to, with a controller lacking in customer service skills (but probably overworked to be fair) telling pilots to "listen not talk" and "improve your English please". We were expecting a free-for-all on approach at Friedrichshafen, but thanks to them having a radar facility all traffic was filtered in nicely and we (BRDO) were only no.3 to land. One of the first things to surprise us was the huge Zeppelin doing 45 minute pleasure flights over Lake Constance, in fact our one regret of the trip was not partaking in one. Once in the show there were a couple of newly certified bizjets and bizprops on display outdoors, with a few more being offer for sale (Ando was very seriously considering PA46 N9127Z - in fact he did make an offer slightly short of the asking price but after four days on display the owner had already received superior offers). Indoors hundreds of trade stalls were selling anything and everything to do with aviation, be it microlights, ultralights, gyrocopters through conventional light aircraft and helicopters up to more bizjets and bizprops. Tyres, windscreens, avionics, iPad holders, GPS, interiors, lights you name it! It was a pilots wet dream. There was even a guy flogging hangars, be it do-it-yourself IKEA type personal hangars big enough for a single C172/PA28 etc, through to bizjet hangars where the aircraft sit on a spinning wheel to avoid having to move several other aircraft to get to yours - and if the bottom spinning wheel is full no matter:- there are another three or four levels above!! All of the major manufacturers were represented but two notable absences were Cessna (in fact Textron altogether; their Bell Helicopter division had a new Bell 505 Jet Ranger X on display but there were no Beechcraft or Cessnas - a huge missed marketing opportunity!) and also Airbus Helicopters, who manufacture just down the road at Augsburg and are a German company so you would expect them to be there! Unlike Textron mind there were a few Airbus Helicopters on display but they were representing their operators rather than the manufacturer.
Greyed out aircraft were reported as present but not logged by us; I didn't put myself out to log all of the gliders/gyrocopters/microlights etc and some may have been noted on previous days and gone by the time we got there. Although marked Private it is to be assumed most of the aircraft in the exhibition halls are manufacturer demonstrators many of which had no markings.

After a struggle to get out of Friedrichshafen due to every man and his dog trying to leave at the same time; we eventually rocked up at Augsburg, where we found an airport quieter than our own! It lost it's last commercial flights last year but is still a busy little GA field and we were delighted to find a Beechcraft service centre here - and once again - it had decent windows allowing almost everything inside to be read off! A couple went begging as the engine panels displaying the registrations were off.

Day Three
Sunday 22nd April
Quite a few additions here overnight and notably many had followed us from Aero Expo; whether they were residents or like us had to seek accommodation further afield is unclear. Like with Strasbourg I went for a walk and found a flying school hangar open as well as a couple of private ones.

After discovering last year that Lelystad is expanding to become an overflow for Schiphol, I was interested to see what progress had been made. The runway extension is complete - though not in use with a big X marked on the new part, and a terminal building is taking shape nicely on the far side. On the current side, the tower has had it's 'lid' taken off, and has been tripled in height, then had the lid put back on, with a little mobile military green ATC unit providing temporary cover. Talking to the staff and pilots, no-one there is looking forward to passenger flights - they don't want to lose the magic of what they have currently, and with 10 in the circuit at the best of times, Ryanairs and Transavias are going to be nothing but a nuisance. Dutch aviation group Scramble are reporting that commercial flights will not start before April 2020 due to new noise and environmental studies having to be done again as the first ones were deemed incomplete and not correct. Dave also struck up a conversation with a spotter through the fence, turns out he's responsible for KLMs Embraer maintenance and knows all about this website, which is always a thrill to see how wide reaching we are!! He was also quite insistant that we're reverting back to "Teesside" soon - we're not sure we believe it but I suppose if anyone is going to have been consulted it's KLM.

That rounds up this years fly away, although there may be a follow-up later with a possible trip to the Costa Blanca where G-STEA is to be based at Alicante for the winter months. Prior to that, Rosey, Ando and myself are off back to Airbus at Toulouse less than a month after this trip albeit via the more conventional means of a Flybe Embraer! Back to this trip; it has been without question one of the most difficult reports I've ever typed up and sure enough the moment we touched down at Friedrichshafen my immediate thought was "F*** my life":- the fun of the hobby was almost certainly going to be overridden by the shear size of the task of logging all of the aircraft and I wasn't far wrong! More than worth it though because as usual this was a hugely enjoyable trip; fantastic flights, great views (when I wasn't sleeping!!), top notch hotels, fantastic food, great company and brilliant banter - with Chris E a perfect addition to the team in that regard! Andrew also fit well in and it was a pleasure watching the enjoyment unfold as he realised just how special these trips are! As always a massive thanks to Ando for exceptional organisational skills, and to Khalid and David for many hours of flying (12 each I think we worked out) which despite pleasuresome must take it's toll.
