After playing with the idea in the past I decided 2018 was the year to get my arse into gear and do Fairford and Farnborough. Having (perhaps embarrassingly) never been to either the Royal International Air Tattoo or the Farnborough International Air Show before, I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone. I left it until quite late in the day to book everything:- just over a fortnight beforehand, thus it proved to be an expensive trip as the scope and scale of both events drove hotel prices up astronomically! In the case of RIAT the nearest reasonably priced hotel was an hour north/north east at Evesham, so the plan was to go as far as Gloucestershire Airport before doubling back for a night-stop here, going to the final day of RIAT the next day, then heading over to the T4 Premier Inn at Heathrow before attending the first trade day of Farnborough, before finally heading home via a night-stop at East Midlands.
Day One
Saturday 14th July
Despite calling in here on a regular basis, I was surprised how much construction has taken place in the short time since my last visit, firstly I missed the junction off the M1 because there's a new one, then I found the DHL cargo apron harder to scope because you can't get to what was previously a car park because the frame for a new hangar (reportedly for bizjets) has taken shape. Otherwise a good haul here for just the usual quick blast round, even if it is mostly residents.

Making my debut here, Wellesbourne is the aviation equivalent of Tom Hardy:- it's everywhere you bloody look and there's no escaping it !! Wherever and whenever you read about GA, Wellesbourne seems to be the topic more than most; aircrew and enthusiasts seem to love it, air operators seem to hate it (Aeros Flight Training recently very publicly moved out citing poor runway maintenance) and the owners want to close it and build houses on it. The latter plan I thought had been defeated by the airfield tenants, but in early June I remember seeing a headline suggesting they'd suffered a setback, sure enough when I got here there were banners and a notice pinned to the café window that read along the lines of "Thought we'd been saved?...Think again". Must be careful not to be hypocritical here, given I am pro-housing at DTVA...but whilst sat in the viewing area enjoying a cheeseburger, some new-build houses could be seen over the opposite side probably just off the airfield, and they do have a threatening presence about them. The difference is the owners of Wellesbourne have made no secret of the fact any housing would be instead of the airfield, whereas at DTVA that is very much misinterpretation and cynicism.
Internet research suggests I would have been granted airside access with a hi-viz if I'd asked in the tower, but I bagged enough just from the various landside points. It might have made me another five or six if I'd bothered. I did ask in Heli Air to look in their hangar, they were more than happy though they only oblige on weekends.

I needed to claw back some time as I had an airside tour booked at Gloucester at 2pm, so a visit to Long Marston Airfield was scrubbed, it seems it's more or less closed now anyway, I was only going in the hope a couple of the wrecks from the failed museum still remained, I tend not to log flex-wing microlights which dominate the bit of traffic that may or may not remain.
With RIAT filling all hotel rooms within an hours radius the nearest I could get was a Premier Inn in Evesham, so I decided to travel a little bit further and visit Gloucestershire Airport. My route the next day would take me straight past but I wouldn't have time to call in. I heard rumours two local enthusiasts host airside tours including hangar access, similar to what we offer here at DTVA but on a more official level. I pre-arranged such a tour and despite my guide warning that a weekend visit would yield less as many hangars would be shut, it still proved to be gold dust! After filling out a security form we went straight through to airside and worked our way clockwise around the airport, most hangars we were allowed in, some we were able to peer through windows and some you wouldn't know were there if you didn't know! I told my guide I'd visited GLO twice before both times in C177 G-BRDO and he knew the airframe "oh yeah the yellowie orange one" - must have a good memory!! Most airport tenants welcome the tours, as they are in aid of charity (Fly 2 Help), a few don't but are polite and professional about it and offer valid reasoning and as is always the case one or two arrogantly and rudely refuse to entertain the idea, which is a shame...luckily thanks to open doors and glass windows I was able to log most of one such operators inmates!!

Day Two
Sunday 15th July
Straight to Fairford for a full day of RIATing, and the advice I had from multiple sources was to arrive by no later than 6.30am! The prior day an hour long queue was reported at 6am! I got parked with zero delay but the security check points don't open until 7.30am so I had an hours stand. Once in, I was immediately struck by the scale of the event - it's laughable to think that some people felt Skylive should have been pushing these levels!! I entered at one end of the static and decided to head straight for the opposite end and work back-over - it took me half an hour to get to the far end with no stopping!!! Once back where I started, I then headed back again, this time browsing the trade stalls, watching the displays which by now had started and I went inside Kawasaki's reverse-engineered C-17, then finally worked back over once more along the crowd line to log stuff parked over the far side. Finally I settled on a patch of grass for a while, but here the problems started, the early start coupled with all the walking meant I was dozing off, and the sun cream I was applying every 10-30 minutes basically did not work and my legs were becoming camouflaged when stood near the Red Arrows so I found a shady patch behind a gazebo and had a kip, waking up whenever the jet/prop noise sounded interesting enough. Eventually though it became too much and I gave up and headed for my car during the Red Arrows display. There wasn't a great deal of interest still to come after that, the one display I regretted not seeing was the Su-27 which many regarded as the highlight of the show. The lessons learned for next year (because make no mistake now I've attended my first one I don't intend to miss another) are to not wear shorts no matter how hot and to get there for about 10.30am regardless of how much queuing I have to do.
Since the F-35 arrived in the UK a few weeks ago people have been struck by just how loud it is (especially for a supposedly 'stealth' jet), yet when the yanks sent up the A variant I wondered what all the fuss was about - then the RAF rocked up with the B variant and I understood completely!! Refreshing and reassuring to see we've got VSTOL capability back mind. The F-35s were definitely the highlight for me, and some die hard RIAT fanatics might come and burn my house down for saying this but the Gulf/Global bizjets as well. The Sunday is notorious for featuring a surprise display, last year a B2 made a round trip from the USA just to perform a single fly-past, this year the hot rumour was a fly-past from Air Force One as it was at Prestwick, but they must have known I was going and instead sent the B2 back again the prior day.

Due to being too tired to be bothered a stop at White Waltham Airfield on my way to Heathrow was scrubbed.
As with Evesham, I suspect the Premier Inn at Heathrow was probably about the nearest hotel not booked solid because of Fairford and Farnborough - otherwise I'd have been wasting my time here as by the time I'd had a shower and gone for a meal in the hotels excellent Thyme Bar and Grill, the night time curfew was fast approaching so little spotting was done, despite once again getting an excellent top floor room (789) overlooking the runway 27L threshold.

I planned to get to Farnborough at 6.30am same as Fairford, but I figured the lessons learned yesterday would also apply here so I aimed for 9.30am instead and it was the right call. I was more hyped for Farnborough than RIAT somehow. I booked a trade day for two reasons, 1) because doing RIAT and Farnborough back-to-back kept the trip costs down and 2) because a lot of the tastier stuff leaves prior to the public days - in fact I've since learned stuff changes on a daily basis, an easyJet A321NEO arrived on day two for a handover ceremony and on day three all of the cargo airliners had departed. It's an exaggeration to say I falsified the pass application form - I could justify having a trade pass if I had to in a court of law, but if they followed up on my stated reason for being there I would imagine it would be 50/50 as to whether or not they let me in. As it turned out being an updater/photographer for DTVMovements was enough to allow me entry! I parked in a field with no queuing, straight through a security tent, then to a bus stop where a free shuttle takes you straight into the show. Business attire is mandatory; I figured a fully blown suit was unneccessary but I wore appropriate 'office' clothing. It seems most enthusiasts attend the trade days for the same reasons as me, some having no respect and looking rather shabby.
An odd occurance happened when the crew of Sycamore OE-XSY collared me to help give it a push after getting it's nosewheel stuck in the mud - despite the ground being so dry from the heat wave that whenever a vehicle drove past it chucked up a dust cloud! Several of us couldn't budge it so it had to call for start, lift and land again!
Highlights here were the Delta Connection and Ethiopian regional jet/prop, the Japanese reverse-engineered E190, and the Turkish Aerospace Industries products all look good, whether or not they can match their more established western competitors is a different matter. Another highlight were the airliner displays which are nothing short of crazy! I bet some people would never board a passenger airliner again if they saw what the pilots subjected them to here! In what were otherwise identical displays, Boeing edged Airbus by going part-inverted during the high-degree turns, but Airbus edged Boeing by slowing the A330NEO almost to the point of hovvering. Clearly the aim is not so much to please the crowd but to demonstrate to potential customers just how far they can push the airframes before the fly-by-wire systems override the pilots.

I think both Daves on here have at some point in the past told me "you can't beat a good Blackbushe" so I took their advice and had a quick call in on my way back from Farnborough as it's just up the road; unfortunately there were no bizjets in, the only things of note were the PC-12 and PA-31. I didn't put myself out to log all of the spam cans, I just photographed the parking area and whatever regs I could pull off the photos would go in the log. The two hangars on the far side of the runway are no longer part of the airport, they appear to have been handed over to the car auction firm that Bin Laden's family tried to wipe out. A shame because hangars should not be used for anything other than aviation and Blackbushe are said to be planning on challenging some of Londons other airports for bizjet traffic in which case they would come in handy.

As mentioned above terrible traffic unrelated to the air shows meant it took double the time (2 hours) to get from Blackbushe to Luton! I was just starting to lose motivation but Luton as per did not disappoint and the sight of all the biz soon perked me back up. There are points around the perimeter that cannot be accessed by driving around, so I went straight to the long stay car park (by the Harrods ramp) as it's two hours free, I then got the free shuttle bus to the terminal in order to then walk back on myself stopping at all of the various nooks and crannies (reverse the process if you know you've just missed a bus as they can be few and far between). Highlights here were the Ugandan Gulf and N162JC, there's nothing particularly special about the latter, I just noticed it's registered to Jim Carey who I'm a big fan of!

Similar to Heathrow yesterday I arrived at East Midlands later than planned and by the time I'd showered and eaten I'd missed the first chunk of cargo movements. I was knackered by this point and could have done with just going straight to bed, but I persevered as I could have a lie in the next day anyway.

Many thanks to Michael Byrne for his assistance with RIAT and Matt Falcus for this help with Farnborough, it was much appreciated and made the trip that little bit smoother. A huge thank you also to my guide at Gloucester! He only expects one or two pound for the charity donation but I was more than happy to part with a more significant amount, mainly because one or two pound isn't going to be of much benefit to the charity and also because it was more than worth the price.
Despite at times being an intense trip, it will definitely now be an annual one! The two biggest events in the British aviation calendar and it's taken me until I'm 30 years old with 12 years worth of 'professional' spotting under my belt before I attended them makes me feel like I've had no right to call myself an enthusiast before now. They say only Chuck Norris manages to attend the Farnborough Air Show every year, but I think now I'll also find the means!
